The Quiet Death of the LNG Pause
Federal Judge Overturns Biden’s USLNG Export Pause
Jake Bittle (July 03): Judge James Cain of the Western District of Louisiana has overturned the Biden administration’s pause on new USLNG export approvals. The pause, hailed as a watershed moment for the climate movement when announced in January, has been effectively nullified within six months. Judge Cain granted a stay request from 16 red states that had challenged the pause, arguing it would harm their economies. He ruled that the DOE failed to justify the pause and did not adequately consider the states’ concerns about the impact on national security, state revenues, employment opportunities, and pollution caused by increased reliance on foreign energy sources. Going forward, it remains to be seen if this ruling will actually speed things up at the DOE as there is still no way to force the department to act. Link to Content
