Joint Industry Statement: Reducing Methane Emissions While Ensuring EU Energy Security

On the eve of the Dec. 15 EU Energy Council meeting, 14 major industry associations spanning the Atlantic issued a joint statement calling on the European Commission to include the EUMR in the EU Simplification Omnibus. The statement welcomed DG Energy Director General Ditte Juul Jørgensen’s willingness to find pragmatic implementation solutions — including certification schemes and penalty relief—but was explicit: those measures, while necessary, do not address the full range of concerns. Targeted legislative amendments are required. The signatories called for a stop-the-clock mechanism on Chapter 5 obligations as the first step, giving parties time to complete a proper simplification process that maintains the EUMR’s emissions reduction objectives while making compliance technically feasible and proportionate.
