Slaying the Dependency Dragon

On the eve of their Global Energy Forum, the Atlantic Council’s Energy Source published my op-ed pushing back on the Kremlin’s narrative that by turning to USLNG, “Europe has simply traded one energy dependency for another.” (Yes, there is proof that this argument originated from Moscow in 2022!) Russia’s argument, I wrote, collapses under scrutiny. Nyet!!

Europe has not traded one vulnerability for another—it has traded coercion for commerce, monopoly for markets, and Russian caprice for U.S. rule of law. The contract data are unambiguous: 130 binding sale-and-purchase agreements totaling 224 mtpa, executed with 72 companies from 26 nations. European buyers represent the largest regional commitment worldwide at 90.84 mtpa across 12 nations. Companies do not voluntarily enter 15- to 20-year contracts with suppliers they believe to be unreliable.
