Russia’s Methane Emissions
Report: Methane Emissions from the Fossil Fuel Industries of the Russian Federation (CGEP)
Dr. Robert L. Kleinberg, Adjunct Senior Research Scholar at the Columbia University Center on Global Energy Policy: As one of the world’s largest oil and gas producers and one of the largest emitters of methane, Russia is central to methane-mitigation. However, Russia’s own estimates of CH4 emissions vary greatly from year to year and are at variance with estimates of international data collection and research institutes… Conclusion: The self-reported methane emissions from the Russian O&G industry declined by a remarkable 89% from 2013 to 2019, with the result that the declared methane intensity of Russia is now less than that of the United States. If left unchallenged, this could affect the behavior of importing countries sensitive to the upstream GHG emissions of their supplier countries. Link to Content (PDF of full report)
