Granholm: A Short Pause
U.S. Energy Secretary: Pause Will Be Short-Lived (CNBC)
Spencer Kimball (March 21): DOE Sec. Jennifer Granholm reassured oil and gas executives at CERAWeek that the pause on USLNG exports from new projects would be lifted within a year. The DOE announced the pause in Jan. to evaluate the impact of the USLNG boom on climate, security, and domestic prices. Despite the pause, the United States remains the largest LNG exporter in the world. The pause has no impact on the 48 bcf/d that is currently authorized. This includes 14 bcf/d currently exporting, another 12 bcf/d under construction, and 22 bcf/d authorized but pre-FID. Regardless, industry executives and Republican lawmakers remain skeptical, arguing the pause could shake investor confidence, rattle allies who depend on USLNG, and potentially undermine the transition to cleaner energy sources.
