USLNG Momentum Maintained
USLNG Momentum Continues Despite DOE License Pause (Energy Intel.)
Michael Sultan (July 19): Despite the Biden administration’s Jan. pause on export approvals to non-FTA countries, USLNG has maintained momentum with contracting in H1 2024 nearly matches that of 2023. The pause, which has since been lifted, initially led to a “flight to quality,” benefiting already approved projects and attracting financially sturdy players. For instance, Tellurian’s Driftwood LNG, an already approved project, attracted interest from Saudi Aramco and Australia’s Woodside Energy. Despite the pause, several new export projects have also advanced since the DOE’s Jan. disruption, demonstrating the resilience of the USLNG sector. These include the proposed Gulfstream LNG and Argent LNG, both located in Louisiana’s Mississippi Delta region. Finally, USLNG exports in H1-24 were at 42.7 million tons (5.8 Bcf/d), up from 41.3 million tons (5.6 Bcf/d) in H1-23. Of note is that the mix of offtakers for USLNG is shifting back toward Asia and away from Europe. Link to Content
