Concerns about USLNG Pause Overblown
Sam Reynolds (Feb. 6): The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) says that the pause on permits for new LNG export facilities: (1) Does not affect U.S. exports from existing or under-construction facilities. (2) There will be plenty of LNG to go around as the world is on pace for record increases in global LNG export capacity this decade. (3) The United States’ largest customers, Japan and South Korea, are set to dramatically reduce their LNG demand. Most of the impacted projects were in the very early stages of development. Yes, the pause doesn’t affect existing projects or those under construction. However, it does impact four projects that do have significant commercial momentum. No one, including IEEFA, can predict that “there will be plenty of LNG to go around.”
