FERC Approves CP2 Terminal

Flouting Biden Pause, Agency OK’s Largest LNG Terminal in US (Floodlight)
Pam Radtke (June 27): Despite the Biden administration’s pause on new USLNG projects, FERC has approved the construction of the nation’s largest new LNG terminal. The $10 billion CP2 in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, is now a step closer to reality. While Venture Global has not yet begun construction, the approval is a significant advancement. The company is now awaiting approval from the DOE to export some of its fuel.
Outgoing FERC Comm’r Allison Clements was the only dissenting vote, stating that the commission had failed to adequately assess the facility’s impact on nearby communities or the climate. However FERC does not consider environmental impacts, and the body has repeatedly rejected requests to consider the impacts of climate change in its decisions.
With FERC’s approval, Venture Global could technically begin building the facility if it secures a final air permit from Louisiana and successfully challenges a complaint filed over its coastal use permit. However, with such high dollar amounts involved, the project’s financiers are likely to balk without a guarantee that it can send the fuel to CP2’s largest customers. Link to Content
